Project Flax

nEW SOUNDS WITH OLD TOOLs

This project transforms the flax processing ritual into a sonic experience. Used in the performance are traditional flax processing tools (a flax breaker, a hackle, and a ripple). They were then attached to a contact mic to capture the sound produced when used. In the absence of flax, the sound produced is the fiber.

“We hairless apes coevolved with our cloth. From the moment we’re wrapped in a blanket at birth, we are surrounded by textiles…They are everywhere…It seems intuitive, obvious – so woven into the fabric of our lives that we take it for granted. We no more imagine a world without cloth than one without sunlight or rain” -Virginia Postrel, The Fabric of Civilization
